These were Lucy’s needles. She’s in her 90s now and unfortunately her macular degeneration has got to the point where she can’t see well enough to safely live alone anymore. She’s moving about 100 km away to a senior care place near where her daughter lives. My Mum and Lucy have been neighbours and friends for over thirty years so, we are all sad.
Lucy’s property sold (very quickly, in, like, three hours) last week and she’s in the final stretch of deciding what to keep. Mum dropped by to help. Lucy gave her a few things she doesn’t need anymore, including these needles.
Mum doesn’t need any needles but she took them thinking I might. And honestly, I don’t need any either but there are a couple in this package with big eyes and as my own eyesight is starting to fail, I appreciate that feature.
I already used one to repair the handle of a canvas bag and it was very easy to thread!
It feels right to have something from Lucy that reflects her industrious, self-sufficient and independent character.
My Mum still drives but, an hour-plus on the highway is more than she’s up for these days. Lucy’s daughter and I have already been recruited to facilitate visits. Something we’re both happy to do.
